Oily hair: how to balance without over-washing
Greasy roots by lunchtime? The fix isn't washing more ā it's washing smarter. Here's how.
Why does hair get oily so fast?
Sebaceous glands at the root produce sebum ā a natural oil that protects the scalp. But when the scalp is over-stripped (by harsh shampoos or too-frequent washing), it overcompensates by producing even more oil. It becomes a cycle:
- Wash with strong shampoo ā scalp feels clean
- Scalp detects dryness ā produces extra sebum
- Hair looks greasy again within hours
- You wash again ā the cycle repeats
What oily hair actually needs
The goal is to retrain the scalp to produce less oil. This means gentler products, less frequent washing, and targeted cleansing ā not more scrubbing.
Balancing shampoo
Gentle formulas that cleanse the scalp without triggering a rebound oil response.
Scalp-only conditioner
Apply conditioner only to mid-lengths and ends ā never the roots.
Weekly clarifying wash
A deeper cleanse once a week removes product build-up and resets the scalp.
What to avoid
- Washing every day with harsh shampoo ā it makes the problem worse
- Touching your hair frequently throughout the day (transfers oil from hands)
- Heavy leave-in products or serums applied near the roots
- Skipping conditioner entirely ā dry ends still need moisture
